The project included a complete facelift of the existing exterior and the addition of a large wrap-around farmer’s porch. The front entrance was increased slightly as part of the design solution for the front of the home. The homeowners selected this home because it was in a beautiful rural area and in a desirable neighborhood for raising their four children. While they were happy with the interior of the house, they were never happy with the exterior, which they felt was a “poor attempt at a grand look”. Beyond the lack of curb appeal, the house sits at the top of an extremely steep hill and with the existing exterior, the area in the front of the house was under used. The homeowners wanted to create a completely new façade and a new front area that could be used by the entire family.

The remodeled front area is highly functional and family friendly. The new porch wraps around from the front to the back. This allows the family to get to the backyard easily by walking out the front door, around the side of the house and down one set of stairs. The new porch has also created a large, open and flat area in the front of the house where the family can relax and the children can play.

Remodeling Challenges & Solutions:

The remodeled façade can be described as “classic country colonial”. The arched windows in the front were replaced with larger, double hung windows that are consistent with other windows and design of the home. The addition of the farmer’s porch that runs the full length of the front of the house as well as around the garage side of the house gives the home the desired country look. In order to achieve this new look, all rails and posts were handcrafted using all wood products including mahogany flooring, pine and cedar, which promote the country feel. The arch over the front entrance was removed and a new roofline consistent with the existing gable roof was added. The steep brick steps were replaced with wide, wooden steps that flow into a beautiful blue stone walkway. The new wooden front door was installed and stained a rich chestnut color with flanking windows that enhance the country charm and appearance of the entry.
